How to Study for AWS SAA on Your Own

AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) is the most-taken exam in the AWS certification lineup, and also the one where study plans go wrong most often. The failure mode is almost always the same: candidates read a thick textbook end to end, feel like they understand it, then run into questions that ask which of four plausible architectures fits a requirement — and discover that recognition is not the same as selection. This article lays out a study order that avoids that trap, using only facts published by AWS plus measured data from our own 400-question SAA practice bank.

The short answer

AWS SAA is passable through self-study. Budget roughly 100 hours, and spend them in this order: pin the scope down with the official exam guide (about 3 hours) → domain-by-domain input (about 40 percent of your time) → practice questions and review (about 60 percent). Making practice questions the backbone — not the finishing touch — is the shortest path.

The reason for weighting practice so heavily is structural. AWS publishes only a 20-question free practice set for each certification, and the official practice exam is delivered through the paid AWS Skill Builder subscription. In other words, the official supply of questions is far smaller than the 65 questions you will face on exam day, so the volume has to come from somewhere else — and that sourcing decision is the single biggest lever in a self-study plan.

First: Get the SAA-C03 Exam Specs Right

A study plan is built on the exam's shape, so start from the numbers AWS actually publishes. Anything you have read elsewhere that contradicts this table should be discarded.

Two of these rows change how you should practice. First, there is no per-domain cutoff, which means the optimal strategy is to raise your total score, not to make every domain uniformly strong. Second, 15 of the 65 questions are unscored, so a question that feels impossibly hard may simply not count — and losing composure over it costs you the questions that do. Can You Really Self-Study? Unbundling What a Course Sells

A paid course bundles four things: scope definition, curated input, question volume, and progress management. For SAA, three of the four are cheaply replaceable. The scope is published in full by AWS in the exam guide. Curated input exists abundantly in Japanese books and free official training. Progress management can be replaced by booking the exam date first, which imposes a deadline more effectively than any tutor.

The one item that does not replace itself for free is question volume. AWS gives you a 20-question official practice set at no cost, and puts the official practice exam behind AWS Skill Builder's paid individual subscription (from USD 29 per month). That is the entire official supply. A candidate who studies only from official free material walks into a 65-question exam having seen 20 questions in the exam's own style. Phase 1: Read the Official Exam Guide and Fix the Scope (about 3 hours)

Most people skip this step, and it is the cheapest three hours in the entire plan. The official SAA-C03 exam guide lists the four domains, their exact weightings, the task statements under each, and — critically — an in-scope services list and an out-of-scope list. Read it once with a highlighter and do three things:

  • Mark what is out of scope: AWS has an enormous service catalog, but only a slice of it is in scope. Deciding what you will not study visibly shrinks the workload.
  • Read task statements as if they were questions: Task statements are close to the skeleton of the actual questions. Whenever you see 'design a ...', ask yourself whether you can name two or more architectures that satisfy it.
  • Convert the weightings straight into hours: Allocate 30 percent of your hours to a 30-percent domain as the baseline. Adjust for your strengths only after that baseline exists.

Domain Priorities: Let the Official Weightings Decide

SAA-C03 has four domains. The weightings below are the official figures from the exam guide, and they should drive your hour allocation before any personal preference does.

Two practical notes. First, security is the largest domain at 30 percent, and it is also the domain that self-taught candidates most often under-study because IAM policy evaluation feels dry compared to picking compute options. Give it the hours the weighting says it deserves. Second, the four domains are not independent. A single question routinely asks for an architecture that is simultaneously highly available, encrypted, and cheap. That is exactly why input alone does not convert into score, and why the practice phase carries the weight it does.

Phase 2: Domain-by-Domain Input (about 40 percent of your time)

The goal of this phase is not to memorize every service. It is to be able to answer, for each domain, the question "given this requirement, which two or three services are the candidates, and what separates them?" Structure your input around comparisons rather than descriptions:

  • Line up same-purpose services and learn only the deltas: For storage, first sort by 'shared file system vs. object vs. block'; for databases, by 'relational vs. key-value vs. analytics'. Then learn only the criteria that decide between options inside each category: throughput, latency, durability, and price.
  • Kill off the 'either one seems fine' pairs: Wrong answers on SAA come from picking the plausible neighbor of the right answer. Whenever you find a confusable pair, check whether you can state the dividing condition in one line. If you cannot, that area is not yet worth points.
  • Limit hands-on work to VPC and IAM: Because the formats are selection-only, console skill is never graded directly. But the relationships between subnets and route tables, and between security groups and network ACLs, stick dramatically better once you have built them yourself.

Phase 3: Make Practice Questions the Backbone (about 60 percent)

Here is the arithmetic that should decide your plan. The official free practice question set is 20 questions. The real exam is 65 questions in 130 minutes. Even if you solve every free official question perfectly, you will have practiced under a third of one exam's worth of material, and you will never have experienced the pacing. The official practice exam does exist, but it is delivered through the paid AWS Skill Builder subscription, so it is a purchase decision rather than a free fallback.

So the practical structure is: use the 20 official questions as a calibration ruler for what the real wording looks like, and get your volume from elsewhere. A workable target is 500 or more questions solved, with every wrong answer reviewed at least twice. The number matters less than the review discipline — 300 questions reviewed properly beats 800 skimmed.

One more piece of calibration, from our own data. Our SAA practice bank of 400 questions is tagged by difficulty: easy 122 / medium 231 / hard 47. Put next to our other AWS banks, the hard share moves from 7 percent for CLF-C02, to 12 percent for SAA-C03, to 31 percent for SAP-C02. The useful takeaway is that SAA is a medium-dominated exam: over half the bank sits in the middle band. Chasing exotic edge cases before you can reliably clear the medium band is a misallocation, and it is the most common one we see.

How to Spend the Final Two Weeks

The last two weeks should contain almost no new input. Their job is to convert what you already know into score, and to remove the operational risks that cost points independently of knowledge.

Two operational reminders for exam day itself. Never leave a question blank — unanswered counts as incorrect and there is no guessing penalty, so a coin flip strictly dominates a blank. And remember that 15 of the 65 questions do not count. If a question looks like nothing you have ever seen, flag it, pick something, and move on; it may well be one of the fifteen. If You Fail, and What Follows a Pass

Knowing the rules in advance takes the panic out of a bad result. After a fail, AWS requires a 14-day waiting period before you retake, and there is no annual limit on attempts — though each attempt costs full price. A rescheduled booking can be moved twice. After you pass, the certification is valid for three years, and you cannot retake the same exam for two years. Renewal happens either by passing the current version again or by passing a higher-tier exam: passing SAP-C02 renews your SAA. One scheduling note that affects the plan: booking your exam date before you feel ready is, in our experience with how candidates use practice banks, the single most effective commitment device. A deadline converts "I will study more first" into a finite plan, and the 14-day retake window means even a miss costs you two weeks rather than a season.

Can you pass the AWS SAA exam through self-study?

Yes. SAA-C03 consists only of multiple-choice and multiple-response questions; there is no hands-on lab or oral component. The scope is fully pinned down by the official exam guide AWS publishes, and the exam is available in Japanese as well as English. What a paid course really sells you is scope definition and progress management, and for SAA both of those can be replaced by the official exam guide plus a practice log. What self-study actually runs short on is not knowledge but question volume: the free official practice question set is a single 20-question set, and the official practice exam sits behind the AWS Skill Builder paid subscription (individual plans start at USD 29 per month). So self-study succeeds or fails on where you source enough questions.

Should I study the material first or start with practice questions?

Pin down the scope with the official exam guide first, then run input and practice in parallel. Reading a textbook cover to cover before touching questions tends to be inefficient for SAA. The reason is that SAA questions do not ask whether you memorized a service description; they ask which combination of services best fits a stated requirement, and that skill only forms once you have compared a lot of answer choices. As a rough split, put about 60 percent of your total hours into practice questions and review, and the remaining 40 percent into input. The one exception is candidates who have never touched AWS at all: spending the first 10 to 20 hours purely on vocabulary makes the later practice far more productive.

Is hands-on AWS practice mandatory?

It is not a requirement for passing, but the VPC area is well worth touching. SAA-C03 uses only multiple-choice and multiple-response questions, so console operations are never graded directly, and in principle you can pass with reading and practice questions alone. That said, the relationships between subnets, route tables, internet gateways, NAT gateways, security groups, and network ACLs stick far faster when you build them once yourself than when you read a diagram, and this area cuts across both the resilient-architecture and secure-architecture domains. If your time is tight, restricting hands-on work to VPC and IAM is the highest-return choice.

Do I need English-language study materials?

Not strictly. SAA-C03 is offered in Japanese, and Japanese-language materials cover the scope adequately. During the exam, however, candidates taking a localized version can toggle the original English wording on screen. That means you can switch to English whenever a translated question reads awkwardly, so knowing AWS service and feature names in English pays off exactly when that toggle matters. Rather than memorizing translated names, learn the service names in their English form. Note also that Pearson VUE's Japanese-language online proctoring is available Monday through Saturday, 9:00 to 16:00 Japan time, so factor that into scheduling if you plan to test in Japanese.

How many hours of study does passing take?

AWS does not publish a required number of study hours, so the following are this site's own guidelines. With a year or more of hands-on AWS experience, budget 50 to 80 hours. With IT experience but essentially no AWS exposure, budget 100 to 150 hours. If your IT experience is also thin, or you are building up from Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02), 150 to 200 hours is realistic. What matters more than the total is how it is distributed: the same 120 hours spread thinly across four months loses effectiveness because the early material fades. A schedule of 1.5 to 2 hours a day compressed into two or three months wastes the least, and booking the exam date first and working backwards from it is the most reliable way to hold that schedule.
