Search for "AWS certification meaningless" and you get two kinds of article. One insists certifications are absolutely worth it. The other insists they are a waste. Both tend to be written by people with something to sell. NicheeLab sells AWS practice questions, so we have an obvious interest here. That is precisely why this article is built the other way around: we start from the criticisms, concede the ones that are true, and only argue where we can point at a verifiable fact.We also deliberately write nothing about salary or the job market. We have not researched it, and we are not going to assert what we cannot verify.
Three of the five common criticisms are true, and two are not about the certification at all. AWS certifications prove one thing: that you have systematically covered the AWS service catalog and its design reasoning. They do not prove you can build. Judged inside that scope, they have real value; judged outside it, they will disappoint you.

This is the strongest criticism, and we concede it without qualification. The reason is structural, and it is in the official exam guides: AWS exams use exactly two question formats — multiple choice and multiple response. There is no hands-on component, no console operation, no configuration task you actually perform. You are always selecting from options someone else wrote. Any exam of that shape can measure whether you recognize the right answer. It cannot measure whether you can produce one from a blank console. Those are different abilities, and the gap between them is exactly what people mean when they say the certificate did not translate.
What follows from conceding this is not "so don't bother." It is that you should stop expecting the certification to do a job it was never designed to do. An exam blueprint is a map of a territory; walking the territory is separate work. The practical implication is covered in the "how to avoid making it meaningless" section below.
AWS certifications are valid for three years. That is official, and if you do nothing, the credential lapses. Compared with a university degree or a national license that never expires, that is a genuine drawback, and it is fair to count it as an ongoing cost rather than a one-time purchase. What is usually left out is that there are two renewal routes: pass the current version of the same exam, or pass a higher-level exam.

So the expiry is a real cost only for people who stop. If you take SAA-C03 and later pass SAP-C02, the SAA renews itself — you never sit it twice. The three-year clock becomes a burden precisely when you have decided the certification is a one-off box to tick, which is also, not coincidentally, the case where it delivers the least value. Two more official facts that bear on the cost calculation: after a failure you must wait 14 calendar days before retaking, there is no annual cap on attempts, and after passing you cannot retake the same exam for two years. Rescheduling is allowed twice.
This one deserves a split verdict, because it is true of how many people study rather than of the exam content. The published domain weights are not detached from real work. SAA-C03 breaks down as Design Secure Architectures 30%, Design Resilient Architectures 26%, Design High-Performing Architectures 24%, and Design Cost-Optimized Architectures 20%. Security, resilience, performance, cost — that is a reasonable description of what an architect actually argues about in a design review. The blueprint is not the problem.
The failure happens one level down. Because the format is "pick from four options," it is possible to build a study routine entirely out of answer recognition: see the stem, recall the answer, move on. That routine passes exams and transfers nothing, because in real work nobody hands you four options. We see the shape of this in our own question bank. Across the 1,200 AWS practice questions we authored, only 7% of CLF-C02 questions are ones we classified as hard, versus 31% for SAP-C02. Hard, in our classification, means you must compare trade-offs among plausible options rather than recall a fact. The recognition-only routine survives at the Foundational tier and collapses at the Professional tier — which is a decent proxy for how far it carries in real work too. It is true that certification bonuses and exam-fee reimbursement vary enormously between employers, and plenty of companies offer neither. But notice what this criticism actually establishes: it says something about the compensation policy where you happen to work. It says nothing about whether the exam content is worth learning.We are not going to tell you what a certification does to your income. We have not researched Japanese salary data, and articles that confidently attach a number to it are, as far as we can tell, extrapolating from job postings or small samples. If the financial return is the deciding factor for you, the only reliable source is your own employer's rules — check whether exam fees are reimbursed and whether a bonus exists before you book anything, since that single fact can change the cost of CLF-C02 from JPY 15,000 to zero.
Sites that memorize and republish real exam questions are widely known to exist, and it is reasonable to assume some passes come from them. If a certificate can be obtained without understanding, then the certificate is a weaker signal than its face value suggests. That much we concede. What does not follow is "therefore don't get certified." The consequence of a diluted signal is that evaluation moves elsewhere — to the technical depth of an interview, to what you can say about a design decision when someone pushes back. That shift favors the person who actually learned the material. A weakened signal hurts you most if your plan was to rely on the signal alone.
One structural note. Every AWS exam includes questions that are not scored — 15 of the 65 on CLF-C02 and SAA-C03, and 10 of the 75 on SAP-C02 — and you cannot tell which ones they are while sitting the exam. This is a standard mechanism for validating candidate questions before they enter the scored pool, and it implies the pool is being maintained rather than frozen. A strategy built purely on memorized dumps is therefore unstable by construction, independent of any ethical argument.
Let's turn the analysis into something you can decide from. "Are AWS certifications worth it?" is not answerable as stated — you have to fix who is asking.

Whether criticisms 1 and 3 land on you is almost entirely determined by how you study. Five concrete countermeasures:
Cost is not just the fee. It is the fee plus the hours, and the hours are usually the larger number. Read the table by ratio rather than by absolute numbers. SAA-C03 costs 1.33x CLF-C02 in fees but roughly 3x in hours — and in exchange moves you from "knows what the services are" to "can choose between them." That is the single largest capability step in the ladder, and it is why SAA-C03 is where we would put the money if you only spend it once. SAP-C02 costs 2x SAA-C03 in fees and about 2x in hours again. The capability it adds is real but narrow: it matters if you are the person making architecture calls. If you are not, the same 200 hours spent building things will do more for you.
One cost nobody budgets for: failure. Retakes are charged in full and there is a 14-day wait, so a failed SAP-C02 attempt costs JPY 40,000 plus two weeks of momentum. Since AWS does not publish pass rates for any exam, you cannot estimate that risk from published data — the only usable signal is how consistently you clear the passing score on mock exams. Almost every "AWS certifications are meaningless" complaint traces back to a mismatch between what someone expected the certificate to prove and what it is built to prove. It is built to prove systematic coverage. It is not built to prove capability, and it never claimed to be. Judged against systematic coverage, it does the job well: the blueprint is a comprehensive, vendor-maintained map of what matters, and working through it is a genuinely efficient way to find your gaps. Judged against capability, it fails — because it is not that kind of exam. So the honest answer to "is it meaningless?" is: it is meaningless if you expect it to replace experience, and it is one of the more efficient learning structures available if you expect it to organize your knowledge. Decide which one you are buying before you pay.

Are AWS certifications really meaningless?
The reasons people call them meaningless are a mix of things you should honestly concede and things that are not really about the certification at all. Three things deserve conceding. First, the exams use only multiple choice and multiple response formats — there is no hands-on component, so a pass does not prove you can actually build a system. Second, certifications expire after three years and lapse if you ignore them. Third, because the format is what it is, it is structurally possible to pass by memorizing questions without understanding them. On the other side, "my company doesn't pay a certification bonus" is a fact about your employer's policy, not about the certification. The honest conclusion: an AWS certification proves that you have systematically covered the AWS service catalog and its design reasoning. Nothing more, nothing less. Evaluate it within that scope.
If they expire in three years, isn't renewing a burden?
The three-year validity is a fact, but retaking the same exam every three years is not the only path. There are two official renewal routes: pass the current version of the same exam, or pass a higher-level exam. Concretely, passing SAP-C02 also renews SAA-C03, and passing any Associate or Professional exam renews CLF-C02. So as long as you keep climbing, your lower certifications maintain themselves. If you have no intention of going higher, though, you will be retaking the same exam every three years and paying the full fee each time — budget for that.
Is it pointless to get certified without hands-on experience?
It is not pointless, but drop any expectation that a certification substitutes for experience — the two prove different things. A certification proves you have systematic coverage of the AWS service catalog and the patterns behind design decisions. Experience proves you can build something that runs and fix it when it breaks. The first does not replace the second, but it can accelerate acquiring it. When you are learning from scratch, the biggest obstacle is not knowing what you do not know, and an exam blueprint functions exactly as that map. The condition, then, is not to stop at the certificate: touching a real environment alongside the study is close to mandatory.
Which of the three exams gives the best return for the cost?
It depends on your goal. On AWS's Japanese pricing page the fees are JPY 15,000 for CLF-C02, JPY 20,000 for SAA-C03, and JPY 40,000 for SAP-C02. If your goal is to build a solid foundation as someone who uses AWS at work, SAA-C03 offers the best return: it costs only 1.33x CLF-C02 but reaches into design decisions, and it renews CLF-C02 at the same time. If your goal is simply to understand the vocabulary well enough to join the conversation in a non-engineering role, CLF-C02 is enough and anything beyond it is overinvestment. SAP-C02 costs twice SAA-C03 and takes more than twice the study time, so unless you are actually responsible for AWS design work, the return is poor.
Do brain dumps devalue the certification?
The complaint has some merit as a dilution argument. Sites that memorize and republish real exam questions are widely known to exist, and because some people pass without understanding the material, the bare fact of holding a certification tells a reader less than it should. But this is not a reason to skip certification — if anything, the opposite. The less hiring managers trust the certificate at face value, the more weight shifts to technical depth in the interview, and that is exactly where someone who actually learned the material separates from someone who memorized answers. It is also worth noting that every AWS exam mixes in unscored questions — 15 on CLF-C02 and SAA-C03, 10 on SAP-C02 — which suggests the question pool is continuously validated and refreshed. A memorization-only strategy is not a stable one to begin with.
